Neglect and Intentional Harm in Nursing Homes

It is difficult to describe how hard it is to decide if it is time for your elderly loved one to get assistance in a "retirement" community, or "nursing home".  So many family dynamics come into play, not to mention the loved one probably isn't thrilled to become a resident at a place they don't consider home, no matter how fun the brochure looks.  But more common than not, the facilities spend a lot of money on marketing and not so much on their staff and care facilities.  This translates into an overworked staff, or a disgruntled staff, which can lead to negligent and sometimes, down right inhumane care.

If you suspect that your loved one is being mistreated in their golden years at a long-term care facility or residence, you need to contact us immediately.  The most common complaints our firm receives about these facilities are:

Bed Sores

Bed sores are common, particularly for inactive, elderly residents that don't get out of bed much.  Still, there are precautions that can be made by the staff to ensure that the pressure points on a particular resident do not develop bed sores.  These are terribly painful injuries.  Once a sore has developed, it is important that it is treated and cleaned to prevent infection--which can complicate the resident's health even more.

Unfortunately, food and water can be used to punish a resident for perceived "bad behavior".  Even the denial of a meal over the course of a few days can have a dramatic impact on a geriatric resident. You may be told that your loved one is refusing to eat or drink anything.  That may be true, but you still need to confirm that with your loved one.  If you see drastic weight loss, that means something is wrong.  Either your loved one is not being fed appropriately, or, they may be refusing to eat because they are being abused or have depression.

Other Areas of Concern are:

Fall Risks/Unexplained Bruising

Unsanitary Conditions Leading to Infection

Verbal Abuse

Physical Abuse

Sexual Abuse
